  The Holywood Players present
Two of a Kind
by Hugh James
  Friday 4 & Saturday 5 July
‘Wally’ Wallis, a feisty old sea dog, is definitely not Matron’s ideal resident of Grove Lodge Retirement Home. However, as long as he can find ways to flout the regulations, in the company of his lifetime friend Potts, and as long as he has his
little friend May to flirt with, he is a reasonably contented man. Things change dramatically however when Potts dies suddenly and his place is taken by the correct and upright Major George Fairbrother. The play, while remaining very much a comedy, is both thoughtful and touching, underlining the fact that older people’s thoughts, feelings and abilities are sometimes overlooked.

  The Belvoir Players present
Widows’ Paradise
by Sam Cree
  Friday 11 & Saturday 12 July
In a caravan somewhere in North Antrim, five ladies arrive to spend a weekend ‘getting away from men’, although some of their number might actually be looking for one, and begin to give their testimonials about how they have suffered at the
hands of those awful creatures we shall call, for the want of a better word,

‘MEN’... The ladies soon discover that they have arrived at the wrong caravan when a trio of men return from a fishing expedition to find them encamped.
It is now quite late, quite dark and quite muddy so the solution is to spend the night co-habiting in a space divided by a curtain.

The return of one of the ladies’ long lost husbands and a visit from a local farmer seeking to fi nd his lost bull add to the confusion in this hilarious romp from the pen of Northern Ireland’s most popular comedy playwright. Sam Cree creates a laugh every three lines and a belly laugh in every page of this battle of the sexes which is arguably his best work.

  City Theatre Dublin presents
The Matchmaker
by John B Keane
  Saturday 19 July
  Directed by Michael Scott
Adapted by Phyllis Ryan

Twenty five years ago, on its first appearance, John B Keane’s The Matchmaker was both funny and daring, and it remains so today. The play follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O’Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn from all parts of Ireland. At the centre of the production is John B Keane’s marvellous and mischievous wit coupled by his unparalleled way with words. The play is run through with hilariously unabashed descriptions of characters and situations
which are usually dead on target and laced with witty satire. The production stars Mary McEvoy and Mick Lally and features an introduction by John B Keane himself on tape.

  The Southbank Playhouse presents
The Importance of Being Earnest
by Oscar Wilde
  Saturday 2 August
The South Bank Playhouse presents Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of wit and manners. It’s the story of Jack Worthing, a country bachelor who goes by the name Ernest when he pops up to the city; and his friend Algernon, who seeks a thrill by becoming Ernest in the country. Jack proposes to Miss Gwendolen Fairfax while Algernon, posing as Jack’s wicked brother Ernest, falls in love with Jack’s ward, Cecily. The question is; what will the formidable Lady Bracknell have to say? South Bank returns to Newcastle with this perfect piece of summer theatre which treats, as Wilde himself entreated, all the trivial things of life seriously, and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality.
